Tool cabinets store expensive, sometimes dangerous tools. Beyond the cabinet lock, the drawer hardware itself can add security: slides with a lock-in function keep drawers from sliding open during movement, and lever-disconnect slides let the drawer lift off completely for service or removal.
Lock-in slides: closed when it moves
Lock-in (also called stay-closed) slides hold the drawer in the closed position with a spring detent, so drawers do not creep open when a roll cab is pushed across a shop floor. They add no parts for the user to operate — the drawer simply stays put until pulled. This is the most common security feature for mobile tool storage.
Lock-out and full-lock slides
Lock-out slides engage a physical lock in the closed position, controlled by the cabinet key or a release lever. Full-lock versions add a release that must be triggered before the drawer can move at all. These suit cabinets holding valuable or hazardous tools, or drawers that must not open during transport.
Lever disconnect for maintenance
Lever-disconnect slides let a technician lift the drawer off the cabinet without tools — useful for cleaning, replacing a drawer, or swapping an insert. The lever is usually accessible from the drawer front, and the same slide keeps full load capacity while engaged.
Matching security level to application
There is no point paying for a full lock on a drawer that already sits behind a cabinet door with its own lock. Combine: lock-in slides for drawers that move with the cabinet, lever disconnect for service access, full lock only for the high-value drawer. Confirm the mechanism on the sample — the feel of a lock engaging is a quality signal buyers check.
Locking hardware adds a moving part, so it deserves the same scrutiny as the load rating: how many cycles before the detent wears, and whether the lock holds under a fully loaded drawer. Tool cabinets in active shops get opened hundreds of times a week, so the mechanism that survives that duty is worth more than the one that feels heavier in the showroom. Match the lock function to each drawer position rather than paying for full locks everywhere.
