An RV or van conversion galley is a kitchen that also moves. Every drawer slide in it faces moisture from cooking and washing, vibration from the road, and loads that shift while the vehicle is in motion. The hardware that works in a static kitchen is not automatically right for a mobile one.
Moisture: the galley is a wet zone
Cooktops, sinks and fridges put humidity into every cabinet. Zinc-plated slides corrode at the ball race and edges within months in this environment. 304 stainless rails, balls and rivets resist corrosion together — the right call for anything within reach of the galley’s water zone, and for any drawer that will ever be opened in the rain or after a wash-down.
Vibration: captive and lock-in geometry
Road vibration works drawer slides loose and lets drawers creep open in transit. Two features fix this: captive slides hold the drawer engaged against side load, and lock-in slides keep the drawer closed with a spring detent. Combined, the drawer stays aligned and shut through thousands of kilometers — no bungee cords required.
Weight that shifts
Pantry drawers in a van carry canned goods, cookware and water containers — and the load shifts as the vehicle accelerates and brakes. Specify pair ratings with margin: 45 kg pairs for standard galley drawers, 65 kg and up for full pantry frames. Full extension matters here too, so the back row of a narrow galley drawer is reachable.
Proof before you build the conversion
Van builders standardize hardware early. Confirm the spec with a loaded sample: load it to your maximum, cycle it, and test the lock-in under simulated vibration. Load capacity and cycle life testing are run to your build cycle and the reports accompany the shipment.
RV and van storage is specified once and lived with daily, so the hardware choice compounds: a drawer that rattles or corrodes is a daily annoyance for the owner, not a line item. Stainless captive slides with lock-in cost more per unit and save the conversion builder the most expensive failure of all — the callback. Sample the loaded drawer, run the cycle test, and let the mechanism prove itself before the build standardizes on it.
