Drawers in truck toolboxes and service bodies work in the harshest environment in storage hardware: full vibration from the road, weather from rain to salt spray, and loads that would worry a shop cabinet. Slides built for furniture fail here fast. The spec has to be built for the truck.

Load: tools on the move

A service body drawer holds hand tools, power tools and parts — commonly 40–80 kg per drawer. Because the vehicle motion adds dynamic load, specify the pair rating with 20–30% margin over the heaviest static drawer weight. Three-section ball bearing slides in the 80–100 kg class are the practical standard for truck boxes.

Locking for transport

Drawers on a moving vehicle must not open on their own. Lock-in slides hold the drawer closed with a spring detent; lock-out slides add a physical lock released by key or lever. For high-value tooling, lock-out is the safer default — a drawer full of sockets opening over a pothole is not a repair you want to make.

Corrosion: stainless or coated

Truck storage sees road salt and rain year-round. 304 stainless slides eliminate corrosion worries entirely and are the standard for premium service bodies; zinc or black zinc coated slides work where the drawer is fully enclosed and the body itself is sealed. If the drawer opens to weather, do not compromise — stainless, confirmed by salt spray testing on demand.

Captive design against vibration

Road vibration works slides out of engagement over time. Captive slides hold the drawer member engaged with the cabinet member against side load, keeping the drawer aligned and the balls in the race. Combine captive geometry with lock-in for drawers that must stay put through thousands of kilometers.

Truck storage is the honest endurance test for drawer hardware: vibration, weather and weight every working day. The spec that survives it combines captive geometry, a lock that engages under load, and stainless or heavy-duty coated rails. Service-body builders who verify those three on a sample before committing a fleet order are the ones who do not spend the next two years replacing slides on warranty.
