Not every cabinet lives in a dry living room. Vanity units, laundry cabinets, outdoor kitchens and spa furniture expose drawer hardware to humidity cycles, cleaning chemicals and standing water. A standard zinc-plated slide corrodes in these environments within months, and a seized drawer in a bathroom is a warranty claim you do not want to manage.
When zinc plating is not enough
Zinc electroplating protects steel in dry interiors. Above roughly 60% average relative humidity, or anywhere surfaces get wiped with wet cloths and detergents, corrosion starts at the ball race and rail edges. If the drawer is within reach of water, specify stainless steel from the start — retrofitting later means replacing every slide in the unit.
Why 304 stainless
Type 304 stainless steel (the 18/8 grade) resists moisture and mild chemicals without any coating, and the ball bearings and rivets are made from the same grade so the whole assembly corrodes evenly. Salt spray testing as proof
Corrosion claims are only as good as the test behind them. Neutral salt spray (NSS) testing is the standard way to compare finishes — zinc-plated parts typically pass 24–48 hours, while 304 stainless parts pass far beyond what a bathroom will ever see. Salt spray testing and material certificates can be arranged on demand for your order; the report ships with the goods.
Balancing cost
Stainless slides cost more than zinc-plated ones, so use them only where the environment needs them. Most furniture programs mix: stainless for wet zones, zinc-plated elsewhere. That split keeps the average unit cost down without risking the warranty.
Humidity testing is the part of the spec most furniture buyers skip, and it is exactly where bathroom and outdoor programs fail. A 48-hour neutral salt spray requirement costs nothing to write and instantly separates hardware that survives wet zones from hardware that does not.
