Heavy-Duty Slides for a US Tool Cabinet Maker

Situation

A North American mobile tool-cabinet manufacturer needed a drawer slide that could carry fully loaded mechanics' drawers in a workshop environment. Drawers were regularly overloaded beyond catalog ratings, and the incumbent slide suffered from ball-retainer deformation and side-play after six months of field use.

The cabinet line is powder-coated in aggressive colours, so any exposed slide had to resist cosmetic corrosion from degreasers and brake fluid. The customer also wanted full extension for tray access and a hold-in detent to keep drawers closed during transport.

Lead time was critical: the existing supplier had pushed delivery out to 18 weeks, and the customer was at risk of line shutdown.

Engineering response

We proposed a 76 mm wide ball-bearing slide rated at 220 kg per pair, with a reinforced ball retainer and a zinc-plated + black passivated finish. The retainer was redesigned with thicker gauge steel and additional bend ribs to prevent the spread that had caused the field failures.

To address the cosmetic requirement we added a topcoat conversion layer after plating, then ran a 48-hour neutral salt-spray test on production samples. The hold-in detent was tuned to 12 N ± 2 N so drawers stay closed on tilted service trucks but are still easy to open.

We aligned the drilling pattern with the customer’s existing cabinet side extrusion and supplied a jig drawing so their assembly team did not need to retool the line.

Outcome

First production lot shipped 10 weeks after drawing sign-off. The customer has since moved the slide into three additional cabinet families.

Field warranty returns for slide-related issues dropped by 84 % in the first 12 months compared with the previous platform. Salt-spray failures at the customer's incoming inspection went to zero, and the detent force is now within the tightest tolerance band they have recorded from any supplier.

Annual volume has grown from an initial 8,000 pairs to a forecast 35,000 pairs for the current year.
