Situation
A hospital-furniture manufacturer needed a heavy-duty slide for mobile procedure carts that carry monitors, pumps and supplies. The drawers are opened hundreds of times per day, often with uneven loading, and the slide had to feel smooth for nurses while supporting up to 80 kg per drawer.
The finish had to withstand frequent cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants without showing corrosion or staining. The customer also required a soft-close action to prevent drawers from slamming in quiet clinical environments.
Because the carts are used in patient areas, the slide had to operate silently and could not have exposed sharp edges or loose parts that could snag linens.
Engineering response
We recommended a 53 mm ball-bearing slide with an integrated soft-close damper and a fully rounded front edge. The damper was tuned for the actual drawer weight so the last 80 mm of closing slows smoothly without rebound.
The plating was upgraded to a 48-hour salt-spray zinc system with an organic seal, and all edges were deburred in a secondary process. We supplied edge-radius inspection data as part of the first-article report.
To ensure quiet operation we measured acoustic output during cycle testing and selected a grease that does not squeak at low temperatures or after repeated cleaning exposure.

Outcome
The slide passed the customer's 100,000-cycle loaded test and 30-day disinfectant wipe-down test with no corrosion or increase in operating noise.
The soft-close function eliminated drawer slamming and improved the user experience in ward environments. The manufacturer has rolled the slide out across three cart models and placed an annual order for 10,000 pairs.
