Situation
An Australian caravan and motorhome builder wanted a drawer locking solution for kitchen and wardrobe drawers that had to stay shut during off-road travel on corrugated roads. Conventional push-latches were noisy, wore quickly and required two hands to open — a poor experience in a compact cabin.
The slide also had to handle high humidity and temperature cycling, from desert heat to coastal dew. The customer had tried imported slides but found the locking mechanism inconsistent after 5,000 km of road vibration, and replacement parts were slow to source.
Aesthetically, the drawer hardware had to stay hidden; the customer did not want external latches or visible catches on the fascia.
Engineering response
We developed a side-mount locking slide with an internal trigger catch. The lock is engaged automatically when the drawer closes and is released by pressing a paddle at the back of the drawer box, keeping the exterior fascia completely clean.
To survive vibration we added a secondary ball-retainer bridge and increased the number of active ball bearings in the loaded zone. The lock cam was switched from zinc alloy to glass-filled nylon, which eliminated the galling that had caused inconsistent release.
Plating was upgraded to a 96-hour salt-spray zinc-nickel system, and every batch is tested for coating thickness before dispatch. We also supplied a spare lock-cam kit and an illustrated service guide so the customer’s after-sales team can maintain the units.

Outcome
The slide passed the customer's 1,000 km corrugated-road shaker test with no unintended opening events. Lock release force remained within the 8–14 N band before and after the test.
The customer launched the new caravan line with the lock-slide as a standard feature and has placed rolling orders for 12,000 pairs per year across three drawer sizes.
After-sales reports show a 72 % reduction in latch-related warranty claims compared with the previous push-latch system.
